Abuja Police Rescue Woman Chained for 16 Months

On June 12, 2026, the FCT Police Command received a distress call indicating that Grace Aniekuoku, 36, had been held captive in a locked room and chained by her brother, Chinedu Aniekuoku, for 16 months. Upon arrival at the scene, police faced resistance from the suspect, who refused entry.

The police invoked their powers to gain access to the premises, where they found Grace in a severely dehumanized state, surrounded by her own excrement and in a condition that left officers deeply shocked. She was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Investigations revealed that Chinedu had allegedly taken Grace's son away two years prior and kept her confined to prevent her from raising questions about the child's whereabouts. The police are working to trace the missing child, and Chinedu remains in custody pending the conclusion of the investigation, after which he will be charged in court.
