Police: Sowore Arrested for Criminal Offences, Wasn’t Tortured in Custody

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified the arrest of human rights activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, stating that it was based on credible allegations of criminal offenses, including forgery and cyberstalking. The Force denied claims that Sowore was tortured in custody, emphasizing that his arrest was conducted in compliance with legal and constitutional protocols.

Sowore was released on bail in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution, and is expected to appear in court to face charges. The police also addressed a viral image showing Sowore with a bandaged arm, explaining that the bandage was a personal belonging prior to his arrest.

They conducted an internal investigation to determine Sowore's access to medical evaluation, which he declined. The police defended the legality of Sowore's detention, stating that it was sanctioned by a valid remand order from a competent court.

The Force cautioned against sensationalizing the issue and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting human rights and upholding the rule of law.
