Police Prevent Sale of Newborn Baby in Anambra

On June 19, 2023, the Anambra Police Command, under the Oyi Division, successfully intervened in an alleged attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby girl in Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area. Police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed that the operation was prompted by credible intelligence and reports from concerned citizens.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had concealed her pregnancy and delivered the child without parental support. She had left her family home in Imo State and sought refuge with a friend in Igbariam, where her alleged plan was uncovered.

Following the police intervention, the mother and her infant daughter were secured, and the police promptly contacted the woman's parents, ensuring a reunion to provide adequate care and emotional support. The Anambra Police Command, led by Commissioner Ikioy Orutugu, commended the vigilance of the public and reiterated their commitment to protecting children from abuse and exploitation.
