Police Prevent Sale of Newborn in Anambra State

On June 19, 2023, the Anambra State Police Command successfully thwarted an alleged attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby girl in Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area. The police acted on credible intelligence and promptly secured both the mother and her infant daughter, facilitating their reunion with family members to ensure proper care and support.

According to Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, the intervention followed a report from a concerned citizen, leading officers to locate the young mother and her newborn. Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had concealed her pregnancy and delivered the baby without her parents' knowledge.

She had left her family home in Imo State to seek refuge with a friend in Igbariam, where her alleged plan was uncovered. The police have continued their investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that any individuals found culpable are brought to justice.
