Sokoto Police Launch Operation Velvet for Traffic Safety

The Sokoto State Police Command has announced the reactivation of Operation Velvet, a traffic enforcement initiative aimed at enhancing road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations. This operation is set to officially commence on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The police, represented by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ahmad Rufa’i on behalf of Commissioner of Police CP Hayatu Shaffa, stated that the operation will focus on various traffic offences, including driving against traffic (one-way), operating vehicles without proper registration, and using fake or obscured number plates. Vehicles found in violation will be impounded, and offenders will face prosecution.

The police emphasized that driving against oncoming traffic is a significant cause of fatal accidents and traffic congestion. Additionally, motorists with tinted vehicles must obtain valid permits, or they will face sanctions.

CP Shaffa instructed personnel to conduct the operation professionally while warning against misconduct, including extortion and harassment. The command also encouraged the public to report any police misconduct.
