Pope Leo Mourns Cardinal Júlio Duarte Langa's Passing

Pope Leo has conveyed his condolences following the death of Cardinal Júlio Duarte Langa, Bishop Emeritus of Xai-Xai, Mozambique, who died on August 3 at the age of 98. Cardinal Langa led the Xai-Xai Diocese for approximately 28 years.

In a telegram addressed to the Apostolic Administrator of Xai-Xai, Archbishop Francisco Chimoio, the Pope expressed his spiritual closeness to the bishops of Mozambique, Langa’s family, the diocese he served, and the entire nation. Pope Leo described Cardinal Langa as a devoted shepherd who served the Church with dedication.

He praised Langa’s long life and priestly service, stating that his ministry was a blessing to Mozambique and the universal Church. The Pope reflected on Langa’s pastoral work, noting his humility, commitment, and perseverance, and emphasized that he remained steadfast in the face of challenges, using difficult moments to promote peace and reconciliation.
