Atiku Abubakar Challenges FG Over $16bn Power Allegations

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has publicly challenged the Federal Government to investigate and prosecute him if it possesses evidence linking him to the alleged $16 billion power expenditure during his time in office. Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, accused the administration led by President Bola Tinubu of reviving old allegations to divert attention from pressing economic issues, particularly concerning the removal of the petrol subsidy.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku questioned the government's accountability for the revenues generated since the subsidy removal, asking, “Where is the people’s money?” He noted that despite repeated allegations over the years, no prosecution has occurred, and he has never been invited to respond to any claims of wrongdoing. Atiku emphasized that he disagreed with the concept of the power project and did not oversee its implementation, urging the government to produce evidence if it exists.
