Radda Launches $1M Food Security Project in Katsina

On Thursday, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda unveiled a $1 million food security project titled ‘Protecting Food Security Against Recurring Floods and Drought’. This 12-month initiative, implemented by Mercy Corps Nigeria with support from the Katsina State Development Management Board and the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, aims to bolster the resilience of vulnerable farming communities against climate-related challenges.

Governor Radda emphasized the necessity of collective action to combat climate change, highlighting the importance of protecting land and water resources in an agrarian state like Katsina. The project will focus on preventing floods and drought, restoring degraded land, and improving water management.

Mercy Corps Nigeria Programme Manager Philip Ikita detailed that the project includes constructing soil bunds and drainage systems on 150 farms, rehabilitating 12 solar-powered water systems, and training farmers in climate-smart agriculture. The initiative also aims to reduce post-harvest losses through improved storage practices.
