NiMet Reforms Under Anosike Transform Nigeria's Climate Agency

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is experiencing a transformative phase under the leadership of Charl Anosike, appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in December 2023. Significant reforms have been implemented, focusing on staff welfare, including a new consolidated salary structure approved after nearly 28 years without review.

Bonaventur Philip Melah, the Chief Executive Officer, noted that previous attempts to improve worker conditions were hindered by bureaucratic bottlenecks. NiMet has invested heavily in upgrading infrastructure, digitalizing weather and climate forecasting operations, and enhancing early warning systems.

The agency is also becoming a preferred destination for young professionals in meteorology. Recent collaborations with the Central Bank of Nigeria aim to integrate climate data into economic research, particularly concerning agriculture and food security.

NiMet has introduced AI-powered forecasting tools and welfare initiatives for workers, including inheritance payments, to ensure comprehensive support for its staff.
