Rift in Adamawa ADC Over Governorship Candidate Replacement

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State is facing internal turmoil regarding the governorship candidacy of Umar Suleiman. The party was initially set to finalize its candidates by Saturday, 8th, but the deadline was extended to Tuesday, 11th.

The situation escalated after the departure of Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who had supported Umar's candidacy. Following Lawal's exit, it was suggested that Atiku Abubakar's camp might seek to replace Umar with Tukur Modibbo.

Lawal alleged that the ADC national secretariat had yielded to pressure from Abubakar and uploaded Modibbo's name to the INEC portal. Despite these claims, Umar's campaign organization asserted that he remains the party's candidate.

The ADC's internal conflicts began during the formation of the state executive council, leading to factionalism with multiple claimants to the chairmanship. Political figures involved include Atiku Abubakar, Babachir Lawal, and Aisha Ahmed Dahiru, with Babachir and Dahiru having previously left the party in protest.
