Boat Capsizes in Rivers State, Two Siblings Drown

On Saturday at approximately 7:45 PM, a tragic boat accident occurred in Ahoada Town, Rivers State, claiming the lives of two siblings, Mekalachi Gogochuri, 25, and Rejoic Gogochuri, 23. They were among five passengers on a canoe that capsized while crossing the river to return home from work.

Their elder brother, Abraham Gogochuri, reported that the boat was in poor condition, lacking life jackets, and had been leaking for some time. He criticized the construction company responsible for the nearby Aliya Bridge, which had collapsed and left residents dependent on unsafe boat travel.

Following the incident, the Ahoada Police Division confirmed the arrest of the boat operator, and investigations are ongoing. The paramount ruler of the Ekpey ethnic nation, Kelvin Ngozi Ez, expressed condolences, describing the loss as painful for the entire community.
