Russia Bans Stanford University as 'Undesirable Organization'

On Friday, Russia officially labeled Stanford University as an "undesirable organization," which results in a ban on its operations within the country. This classification is part of a larger trend where Russia has blacklisted approximately 300 entities, including various human rights groups, non-profits, and independent media outlets.

The designation of Stanford, a prestigious institution founded in 1885 and known for producing 36 Nobel Prize winners, aligns with Russia's controversial law passed in 2015 that allows the government to outlaw foreign organizations deemed a threat to national security. This move follows the Kremlin's military actions in Ukraine, which began in 2022, and reflects a significant crackdown on dissent and opposition, reminiscent of tactics used during Soviet times.

Other notable entities on the blacklist include Yale University, Berkeley, Human Rights Watch, and Transparency International.
