Iran Executes Wrestling Champion Amid Protest Crackdown

Saleh Mohammadi, a 19-year-old wrestling star from Qom, Iran, was executed on March 19, 2023, amid a crackdown on protesters. He was accused of killing two police officers during anti-government protests in January.

Alongside Mohammadi, two other men, Mehdi Ghasemi and Saeed Davoudi, were also executed. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, condemned the executions, highlighting that the men were denied fair trials and subjected to coercive confessions.

Nima Far, an Iranian human rights activist, spoke to Fox News, criticizing the fast-tracked proceedings. This execution follows the 2020 execution of champion wrestler Navid Afkari, who faced similar charges linked to protest activities.

The crackdown on dissent intensified after protests in Tehran on January 8-9, during which security forces reportedly killed 7,000 demonstrators, according to U.S.-based human rights activists. The public execution of Mohammadi reflects the Iranian government's ongoing efforts to quell dissent amid rising tensions in the region.
