Senate Extends 2025 Budget Deadline to December 2026

On September 29, 2026, the Senate approved an extension of the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving the deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026. This decision was made following the passage of a bill sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central).

The amendment aims to allow Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to complete ongoing projects and effectively utilize appropriated funds. Bamidele stated that the amendment was necessary due to suboptimal levels of capital project implementation despite the release of funds.

This marks another extension of the 2025 capital budget, which had previously been extended from March 31 to June 30, and then to September 30, 2026. The latest extension means that funds will remain available for implementation until December 31, 2026, pending the President's assent.

This decision aligns with the Federal Government's commitment to avoid overlapping budgets, as stated by President Bola Tinubu during the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
