Senate Extends 2025 Capital Budget Deadline to December 2026

The Senate passed a bill extending the implementation period of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriations Repeal and Enactment Act from September 30 to December 31, 2026. This extension aims to enable the Federal Government to complete ongoing projects and utilize funds that have already been appropriated and released.

The bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, was expedited through second and third readings. Bamidele emphasized the necessity of the extension for ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to finalize capital projects, citing factors like procurement and payment processes that could hinder timely completion.

He clarified that the amendment does not introduce new appropriations but merely extends the existing timeline. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin supported the bill, highlighting its importance in preventing abandoned projects.

Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro also backed the extension, urging senators to avoid political blame during discussions. The extension aims to protect public investments and maximize the value of appropriated funds.
