Senate Extends 2025 Capital Budget Deadline to December 2026

On September 30, 2026, the Senate extended the implementation period of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act for the fourth time, moving the deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026. This decision was made to prevent the abandonment of ongoing projects and to ensure the effective utilization of already appropriated funds.

The extension was enacted through the Appropriations Repeal and Enactment Act 2025 Amendment Bill 2026, which passed through second and third readings on the same day. Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele stated that the extension allows ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) an additional three months to complete eligible capital projects and process outstanding payments.

He emphasized that the extension does not constitute a new appropriation but provides additional time within the existing legal framework. Bamidele also cautioned MDAs to maintain accountability during this period, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
