SERAP Demands INEC Account for ₦126bn Electoral Funds

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to account for over ₦126.46 billion in public funds appropriated for electoral operations. This demand, made in a letter dated September 12, 2026, and signed by Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, follows findings from the 2023 audited report of the Auditor-General of the Federation published on August 7, 2026.

SERAP's concerns stem from allegations of funds being “diverted, lost, irregularly spent, mismanaged,” and unaccounted for, particularly regarding the procurement of ballot boxes, electoral devices, and other materials. Key findings include an alleged irregular payment of over ₦112.15 billion without competitive bidding and a lack of evidence for procurement.

Additionally, SERAP cited a payment of ₦1.058 billion for vehicles without proper bidding processes and raised concerns about potential fund loss and inflated contracts. The organization has called for a comprehensive account of all transactions related to these funds.
