Scheduled Power Outages in Northern Nigeria for Grid Upgrade

The Nigerian Independent System Operator has announced that seven northern states—Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, and Yobe—will face scheduled power outages from April 9 to May 22, 2026. These outages will occur weekly on Thursdays and Sundays from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The outages are necessary for the installation of optic ground wire and fiber optic infrastructure along the Gombe 330kV transmission line, part of a broader effort to modernize the national grid. The agency has assured customers that alternative supply arrangements will be made, although power availability will be reduced during the outage periods.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator emphasized that these upgrades are crucial for enhancing grid operations, improving supervisory control and data acquisition, and strengthening telecommunications capabilities. Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve electricity reliability in the region, enabling faster fault detection and better load management.
