Advocacy Group Warns Against Misinformation on Airstrikes

The Nigerian Advocacy for Peace and Stability, a non-partisan advocacy group, issued a statement on Tuesday warning against the spread of misinformation related to a Boko Haram attack and military airstrikes in Shiroro, Niger State. Ismail Abu, a representative of the group, cautioned that inaccurate reporting during crises could undermine ongoing counter-terrorism efforts by the Nigerian military, which has recently achieved notable successes against terrorist and criminal elements.

The group highlighted the importance of public scrutiny and responsible media engagement, stating that unverifiable claims during security operations could create confusion and heighten public anxiety, inadvertently aiding terrorist propaganda. They noted that misinformation campaigns are particularly troubling for the Nigerian armed forces, which are under pressure to degrade criminal networks.

The statement emphasized the need for journalists and content creators to verify information and avoid amplifying claims that could escalate fear and serve the objectives of violent extremist groups.
