Misinformation Threatens Nigeria's Anti-Terror Efforts

The Nigerian Advocacy for Peace and Stability (NAPS) has expressed concern over the spread of misinformation related to recent security incidents involving Boko Haram in Yobe State and military operations in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State. NAPS highlighted that inaccurate reports of civilian casualties during military aerial operations could undermine ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

The organization, represented by Ismail Abu, cautioned that the dissemination of unverifiable claims creates confusion and heightens public anxiety, inadvertently aiding terrorist propaganda. NAPS emphasized the importance of responsible media engagement during security operations, as misinformation can distort the reality on the ground and weaken public confidence in military actions.

The statement also noted that the Nigerian military has recorded significant operational successes against terrorist groups, and misinformation during active military operations poses risks to civilian security and troop morale. NAPS urged journalists and civil society to verify security-related information through credible channels to avoid amplifying claims that could escalate fear and serve the interests of violent extremist groups.
