Social Workers Urge Unity Amid Rising Divisions in Nigeria

Social workers in Nigeria, particularly from the Lagos State chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASOW), have expressed alarm over the rising social divisions in the country. Chairperson Modupeola Sahid Adebambo highlighted that these divisions, which stem from political, ethnic, and religious conflicts, threaten social cohesion and the well-being of citizens.

In light of the upcoming International Social Work Day in 2026, Adebambo called for a national unity drive, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and collective responsibility to address these challenges. The theme for this year, "Co-build Hope, Harmony," reflects the urgent need for cooperation among individuals, communities, and institutions.

Adebambo also pointed out the critical role of social workers in promoting inclusivity and advocating for vulnerable groups. NASOW Lagos plans to engage the public through media campaigns and school outreach programs aimed at fostering tolerance and mutual respect among young people, thereby strengthening community bonds and promoting peace.
