Sokoto PDP Chairman Muhammad Goronyo Resigns

Muhammad Bello Aliyu Goronyo, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, announced his resignation from the party in a letter dated August 30, 2026. His resignation is effective from August 31, 2026, and he cited “purely personal” reasons for his decision.

Goronyo expressed gratitude to the PDP leadership and members for the opportunity to serve and the experiences gained during his tenure. He served as the state PDP chairman during the 2023 governorship election, where the party narrowly lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite a leadership crisis at the national level within the PDP, Goronyo and the state executive maintained neutrality by not attending the national conventions in Ibadan and Abuja. His resignation comes amid increasing political realignments in Sokoto State as parties prepare for the 2027 general elections, with many still finalizing their internal leadership and campaign structures.
