SWDC Secures Licence for South-west Rail Network

The South West Development Commission (SWDC) has obtained a provisional licence to create a comprehensive passenger and freight rail network that will connect the six states in the South-west region of Nigeria. Dr Charles Akinola, the Managing Director of SWDC, made this announcement during a strategic meeting with regional stakeholders at Cocoa House in Ibadan on Monday.
Akinola stated that the commission will collaborate with Odu’a Investment Company Ltd. and the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission to develop this interconnected rail system. He also mentioned that the SWDC is exploring other infrastructure initiatives, including energy security and an integrated road transportation system.
Plans include constructing a road linking Ore in Ondo State to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and establishing a South-west infrastructure development fund. Akinola praised Odu’a Investment Company for its financial contributions to the states and acknowledged the role of the Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries in regional development.
