Sultan and Vatican Envoy Promote Interfaith Cooperation

During a high-level meeting on Monday, Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar and Vatican Secretary of State Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher discussed the importance of interfaith cooperation between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria.

The meeting, which included leaders from the Catholic Church in Nigeria, aimed to strengthen relationships and promote peace and security. Professor Salisu Shehu represented the Sultan, emphasizing the shared commitment of faith communities to address societal challenges.

A significant concern raised was the growing menace of hate speech, described as a serious threat to national unity and religious harmony. The leaders called for religious organizations to work together to combat hate speech and the spread of fake news, which fuels societal tensions.

They also expressed concern over a rising trend of atheism among youth, urging religious institutions to engage with younger generations to reinforce faith-based values. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to deepen interfaith dialogue and promote mutual respect and social cohesion in Nigeria.
