Super Falcons Shocked by Malawi in WAFCON Opener

The Super Falcons, the reigning champions of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), faced a shocking defeat against Malawi in their tournament opener. This match marked Malawi's first-ever appearance in WAFCON.

The Falcons, who had never lost to a WAFCON debutant before, conceded two second-half goals from Temwa Chawinga, who scored a brace, and her sister Tabitha Chawinga, who added another. Nigeria's Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu managed to score, but it was not enough to secure a win.

The match saw Nigeria's goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie misjudge a clearance, allowing Temwa Chawinga to score the first goal in the 73rd minute after a VAR check. Malawi extended their lead shortly after, and although Ajibade converted a penalty, Nigeria conceded a third goal deep into injury time.

Malawi now sits second in Group C with three points, while Nigeria faces a critical match against Zambia next, where a loss could eliminate them from the tournament.
