TCN Reports Tower Collapse Due to Rainstorm in Lagos

On April 16, a severe rainstorm led to the collapse of a transmission tower along the Ikeja West-Osogbo 330 kilovolt line in Lagos. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) described the incident as a force majeure event in a statement issued by Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs.

A force majeure refers to unforeseen events or natural disasters that prevent an organization from fulfilling contractual obligations and often shields them from liability. The storm caused the transmission line to trip, and upon inspection by maintenance teams, it was revealed that tower 515 had collapsed due to the storm, failing at its midsection.

TCN has begun mobilizing materials and personnel to re-erect the damaged tower, with engineers already on-site to dismantle the collapsed structure as part of efforts to restore the line. Despite the disruption, TCN assured that measures are in place to minimize the impact on electricity supply and that they will provide updates on the repair work progress.
