Nigerian Wrestlers Secure Scholarships at Iowa State University

Kolawole Esther, Christinah Ogunsanya, and Adekoye Jumoke, three Nigerian female wrestlers, have successfully transferred to Iowa State University, a prestigious NCAA Division One program in the United States, from William Penn University, an NAIA institution. The head coach of the Nigerian women’s wrestling team, Akuh Purity, credited Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, for this achievement.

Purity described the transfer as a defining moment in the athletes' academic and sporting journeys, highlighting their consistent participation in international competitions and impressive performances that attracted Iowa State recruiters. He emphasized that this achievement reflects the immense potential of Nigerian wrestlers when supported appropriately.

Purity noted that Adeniyi's financial investment and commitment to athlete development have been crucial in showcasing Nigerian wrestlers' talent on the international stage. He expressed hope that this success would inspire more young wrestlers in Nigeria and called for continued investment in grassroots wrestling development and elite athlete programs.
