Tinubu's Spokesman Denies Re-election Pledge on Power

Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, dismissed claims that Tinubu pledged to abandon his re-election bid over Nigeria's power supply challenges. During an interview, Onanuga stated that Tinubu's remarks from the 2022 campaign were taken out of context.

He explained that while Tinubu has not firmly committed to forgoing re-election, he has demonstrated a commitment to reforming the power sector since assuming office. Onanuga cited the signing of the Electricity Act, which allows states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently.

He acknowledged that electricity supply has not yet reached the desired level but attributed the challenges to long-standing issues, including gas shortages and legacy debts owed to gas suppliers, as well as outdated transmission infrastructure. The federal government remains focused on addressing these challenges to improve power generation and distribution across Nigeria.
