Tinubu Orders EFCC to Lift Freeze on Osun Accounts

On August 6, 2026, President Bola Tinubu instructed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to return to court and withdraw its order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government. This directive followed the EFCC securing the court order on August 5, 2026.

Tinubu expressed that while he was not displeased with the EFCC's actions in fulfilling its statutory duties, the timing was unfortunate, as it could lead to public perceptions of federal interference in the electoral process. He emphasized that since taking office, he has allowed anti-corruption agencies to operate independently and without political influence.

Tinubu stated he had not received a full briefing on the reasons for the EFCC's decision but stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of Nigeria's democratic process. He directed the EFCC to discontinue the legal action against the Osun State Government to ensure the transparency and credibility of the forthcoming governorship election.
