Lekki Port Traffic Crisis: Stakeholders Call for Action

Traffic gridlock is worsening around the Lekki Deep Sea Port and Dangote Refinery corridor, threatening cargo evacuation and port operations. Stakeholders blame poor enforcement of traffic regulations and uncoordinated truck movements for the congestion.

Nearly 1,000 trucks are parked indiscriminately along the port access road, while several accredited truck parks, including Hog Amazon and Diamond Star, remain underutilized. Adeola Olusodo, Managing Director of Lekki World, acknowledged the challenge and stated that traffic enforcement is the responsibility of the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Sesan Olowa, Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, noted the council's limited powers to enforce state traffic laws and mentioned ongoing engagements with stakeholders, including NUPENG and NARTO, to find solutions. Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Seun Osiyemi, recognized the congestion but dismissed concerns about its permanence, indicating that efforts are underway to address the situation.
