Troops Eliminate ISWAP Commander Bako Gorgor in Borno

Troops conducted a military operation in Borno State that resulted in the death of Bako Gorgor, a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Gorgor, believed to be around 60 years old, was a long-serving member of the insurgent group and held several strategic positions, including membership in ISWAP's Shura Council, the group's highest decision-making body.

His death was confirmed by multiple intelligence sources, which intercepted internal communications among ISWAP fighters acknowledging the incident. Gorgor was previously reported killed in 2022 alongside senior ISWAP commander Ibrahim Mai, but he continued to lead major offensives against rival Boko Haram factions.

Notably, he was involved in the attack that resulted in the death of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau. Following this incident, 17 of Shekau's commanders reportedly surrendered and pledged allegiance to ISWAP.

Gorgor's death is expected to affect the leadership structure of the insurgent group in the Lake Chad region.
