Troops Foil ISWAP Attack on Mairari Military Base

On July 1, 2026, at 11:25 PM, troops from the Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai, led by Captain Moham Goni, successfully repelled a coordinated night attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mairari, Guzamala Local Government Area, Borno State. The attack resulted in heavy casualties for the insurgents, who were compelled to retreat after a fierce gun battle.

Troops recovered several items abandoned by the fleeing insurgents, including AK-47 rifles, loaded ammunition, and rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) tubes. Surveillance footage confirmed that many insurgents were killed or wounded during the failed assault.

Notably, the attack occurred just a week after 950 households had returned to Mairari, indicating a desperate attempt by the terrorists to instill fear and disrupt the ongoing resettlement process. Fortunately, there were no civilian casualties reported during the incident, although two soldiers from the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives in the exchange of fire.
