Trump Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' Amid Trade War

On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America" as part of his ongoing trade conflict with Canada. The order directs the Interior Department to update the lake's name in the U.S. geographic naming service.

While Trump cannot compel Canada to adopt this name, he has been vocal about his grievances regarding trade and military issues with the country. This announcement coincides with the U.S. imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after trade negotiations failed.

In response, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on an equal amount of American goods. Trump made the announcement at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, displaying a map labeled "Lake America." He stated that his action was not intended as a geopolitical message but expressed frustration over Canada's trade practices.

Canadian officials, including Prime Minister Mark Carney and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, criticized the name change, with Houston calling it "real foolishness." The name Lake Ontario originates from the Huron Indigenous word meaning "lake of shining waters.".
