Prof. Olapegba Appointed 14th Vice-Chancellor of UI

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Prof. Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the institution's 14th substantive vice-chancellor.

This decision followed a competitive selection process that included eight candidates, initiated ahead of the current vice-chancellor's tenure expiration on November 1, 2026. Chief Adebisi Akande, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, announced the appointment after the council approved the recommendation of the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board.

The selection process began with advertisements in three national newspapers in April 2026, attracting six applications. A search team was then formed to identify additional qualified candidates, resulting in two more applications.

The council met with all candidates on July 21 for assessments, leading to five shortlisted candidates. The selection board interviewed these candidates before recommending Olapegba, who is currently the deputy vice-chancellor (administration) and a professor in the Department of Psychology.

Akande described the selection process as thorough and transparent.
