University of Ibadan Appoints New Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Prof. Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the institution’s 14th Vice-Chancellor. This decision followed a competitive selection process involving eight candidates, announced on Wednesday by Adebisi Akande, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council.

The selection process began in accordance with the University Act ahead of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor's tenure expiration on November 1, 2026. Advertisements for the position were published in April 2026, attracting six applications.

A Search Team was then constituted to identify additional qualified candidates, resulting in two more applications. The council assessed all eight candidates on July 21, leading to five being shortlisted.

The Joint Council-Senate Selection Board interviewed these candidates and recommended Olapegba as the best fit. Akande described the selection as thorough and transparent.

Olapegba, who is the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and a professor in the Department of Psychology, will succeed the outgoing Vice-Chancellor.
