UNILAG Issues Guidelines to Combat Sexual Harassment

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has released a set of counselling guidelines through its Student Affairs Division to assist female students in reducing the risk of sexual harassment and rape on campus. Displayed on a roll-up banner, the advisory addresses concerns over reported sexual assault cases within the university community.

Key recommendations include avoiding revealing clothing, not mingling carelessly with men, steering clear of secluded areas with male acquaintances, and being cautious with drinks. The advisory also emphasizes the importance of resisting peer pressure and being assertive.

This initiative follows a notable case in April, where a 20-year-old undergraduate testified that she was allegedly raped by lecturer Dr. Samuel Ojogbo on August 22, 2025.

UNILAG has faced other sexual assault allegations in the past, including a 2019 case involving five students charged with the gang rape of a 17-year-old student. The university's advisory is part of ongoing efforts to enhance campus safety and protect students from sexual violence.
