Mariam Zakariyah Becomes UI's First Female Bursar

The University of Ibadan (UI) has appointed Mrs. Mariam Zakariyah, Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA), as its first female and 10th substantive Bursar in the institution's 78-year history. Zakariyah officially took on her new role during a ceremony at the university.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale described her appointment as a reflection of UI's enduring tradition, culture, and commitment to excellence. He commended the outgoing Bursar, Mr. Adewuyi Popoola, for maintaining financial stability during his tenure.

Adebowale emphasized that the appointment process was fair and free from gender or religious bias, highlighting the university's tradition of smooth transitions as a source of institutional strength. Zakariyah expressed gratitude for the fair appointment process and committed to leading the Bursary effectively.

She pledged to utilize her expertise to meet the expectations placed upon her and sought the continued support of the university management. Prayers for a successful tenure were offered by the Chief Imam and the Chaplain of the Chapel of the Resurrection.
