US approves sale of $346m bombs, missiles, other weapons to fight terrorism in Nigeria

The US government has approved the sale of precision bombs, rockets, missiles, and other weapons worth an estimated $346 million to Nigeria to aid in the fight against terrorism. The deal, confirmed by the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), aims to enhance Nigeria's military operations and strengthen efforts to combat illicit trafficking in the region of the Gulf of Guinea.

The military hardware approved for sale in 2022 includes 500 lb bombs, Air Foil Groups (AFGs), Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II warhead rocket motors, and other equipment. The package also comprises 12 attack helicopters, guidance systems, night vision imaging systems, and other defense items.

The sale, supported by contractors such as Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles Defence, and BAE Systems, aligns with US foreign policy goals and national security objectives to enhance security in Africa and support Nigeria's capabilities in addressing current and future threats from terrorist organizations and illicit trafficking.
