Archbishop Kawas Defends Support for Tinubu Over Obi

Archbishop Leonard Bouwe Kawas, the President General of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), defended his endorsement of Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election, stating that his previous support for Peter Obi in the 2023 election did not involve any financial benefit. In an interview with Arise TV, Kawas faced criticism from some Nigerians who labeled him a “fake bishop” for his support of Tinubu.

He clarified that he personally financed the transportation of six clergymen to support Obi's campaign but received no monetary assistance from Obi, emphasizing that he never demanded financial support for his backing. Kawas also referenced his past involvement with former President Goodluck Jonathan, asserting that his political engagement is not new, having served on Jonathan’s Presidential Campaign Council.

He questioned why his decision to support Tinubu, based on what he believes was divine direction, should lead to doubts about his credibility as a bishop.
