Vietnam and Myanmar Strengthen Defence and Economic Ties

On Saturday, during Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing's first official visit to Vietnam, Vietnamese leader To Lam and Hlaing agreed to deepen defence and security cooperation, marking it as a key pillar of their bilateral relations. The Vietnamese government stated that both countries will strengthen military training, exchanges between young officers, search-and-rescue operations, and disaster response.

They committed to enhancing information sharing and coordination against crime and reaffirmed their commitment to preventing any activities against each other from their territories. The leaders also agreed to bolster political trust through increased high-level exchanges and better utilization of existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms.

In addition to defence, they discussed expanding economic, trade, and investment relations, identifying opportunities in high-tech agriculture, food processing, telecommunications, information technology, digital transformation, energy, and transport infrastructure. They pledged closer coordination within ASEAN and Mekong frameworks and supported peace and stability in the South China Sea.

Earlier, Hlaing visited a VinFast electric vehicle factory and Viettel telecommunications group in northern Vietnam.
