Nigeria and Vietnam Strengthen Bilateral Relations

On September 10, 2026, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD, met with the Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, H.E. Mr. Bui Quoc Hung, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Vietnam.

Their discussions aimed to strengthen political and diplomatic engagement, particularly through the establishment of an annual political consultation mechanism between their Ministries of Foreign Affairs. Both parties emphasized the importance of high-level visits and institutional exchanges to maintain momentum in bilateral relations.

The meeting also focused on economic cooperation, noting Vietnam's position as Nigeria's third-largest trading partner in Asia, with bilateral trade exceeding US$1 billion in 2025. They expressed interest in enhancing market access and promoting Vietnamese investment in Nigeria, especially in agriculture, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

Additionally, they reviewed outstanding bilateral agreements and recognized Nigeria's potential as a gateway for ASEAN engagement with ECOWAS.
