Ruth Asuquo Wins Silver at 2026 Commonwealth Games

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, weightlifter Ruth Nyong Asuquo secured a silver medal in the women's 48kg category, exceeding the National Sports Commission's (NSC) pre-competition projection of a bronze medal. Asuquo's performance included consistent lifts totaling 168kg, placing her second in a competitive event won by India's Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu, who lifted a total of 190kg, setting new Commonwealth records in the process.

Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry claimed the bronze medal with a total lift of 167kg, just one kilogram behind Asuquo. This achievement not only adds to Nigeria's medal tally but also highlights the progress of Nigerian weightlifting on the international stage.

The NSC's Podium Board initiative aims to identify realistic medal prospects and support elite athletes, and Asuquo's success is expected to receive commendation from the organization. Team Nigeria's strong performance at the Games follows a successful opening day for the para powerlifting team.
