Governor Mutfwang Condemns Illegal Hisbah Activities

Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang alerted the public regarding the activities of a group allegedly functioning as Hisbah in parts of Jos North Local Government Area. This group was accused of intimidation, harassment, extortion, and imposing unauthorized rules on residents.

Hisbah is a religious and moral enforcement system prevalent in several northern Nigerian states, but Plateau State, predominantly Christian, does not implement Sharia Law. Mutfwang emphasized that neither the executive nor legislative arms of the state government have introduced Sharia Law.

He condemned the group's operations as illegal and unauthorized, warning that individuals behind these activities could face arrest and prosecution if they do not cease. The governor instructed security agencies to identify and investigate those involved and to prosecute anyone promoting or aiding these unlawful activities.

He reiterated that Nigeria is a secular state with a single Constitution and legal system, and that Plateau State has the right to maintain peace without succumbing to religious violence.
