APC Holds El-Rufai to Weaken Opposition Ahead of 2027

Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated in an interview that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is holding former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai in detention to weaken opposition forces as the 2027 general elections approach. Abdullahi noted that the APC-led federal government believes that releasing El-Rufai would strengthen the opposition and increase pressure on the ruling party in the upcoming elections.

He described El-Rufai's continued detention as politically advantageous for the government and raised concerns about the former governor's health, stating that he requires adequate medical attention while in custody. Abdullahi emphasized that if anything were to happen to El-Rufai, President Bola Tinubu would be held responsible.

He further accused the federal government of focusing on the 2027 elections instead of addressing pressing socio-economic and security challenges in the country. El-Rufai is currently facing charges of alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State and is set to stand trial for separate allegations involving wiretapping.
