Shettima Urges South Africa to Protect Nigerians' Rights

On August 31, 2026, Vice President Kashim Shettima addressed the issue of xenophobic and afrophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, stating that Nigeria will no longer tolerate the mistreatment of its citizens. Speaking to journalists in Luanda, Angola, before returning to Abuja, Shettima emphasized the need for South African authorities to protect lives and uphold human dignity while enforcing immigration laws.

He represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union. Shettima highlighted Nigeria's historical support for Southern African nations, making the current treatment of Nigerians particularly painful.

While advocating for diplomatic engagement, he asserted that Nigeria would communicate firm positions when its citizens are endangered. He urged South African officials to differentiate between strict immigration enforcement and the targeting of foreign nationals.

The issue has been a source of diplomatic tension, prompting Nigeria to demand its inclusion on the agenda of the upcoming AU Assembly session in January 2027.
