NPFL Clubs Need N14bn Annually for Player Salaries

Adams Mouktar Mohammed, the chairman of the FCT Football Association, has praised the proposal for Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) players to receive a monthly salary of N2 million, calling it a significant milestone for Nigerian football. However, he highlighted that the 20 NPFL clubs would collectively require N14 billion annually to cover player wages alone.

Mouktar stressed that without a proper financial structure, such a salary increase would not transform the domestic game. He pointed out the necessity for guaranteed broadcasting income, stronger sponsorships, improved matchday revenue, and better club licensing.

The proposed N1 billion prize money for the NPFL champions was described as ambitious, with Mouktar asserting that its feasibility depends on guaranteed and sustainable funding. He cautioned against imposing salary figures without the necessary revenue to support them, advocating for a phased implementation of salary increases and ensuring that players receive their wages fully and on time.
