Nigerians Urged to Prioritize Climate Action in 2027

On Friday, during an event in Abuja to mark World Environment Day, the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) launched the Vote4Clim 2027 campaign. This initiative calls on Nigerians to prioritize climate action, food security, clean energy, and health in the 2027 general elections.

Michael Terungwa David, the Executive Director of GIFSEP and head of the Vote4Clim campaign secretariat, highlighted the pressing challenges Nigeria faces due to climate change, including shrinking Lake Chad, increased desertification in northern Nigeria, and coastal erosion in the Niger Delta. These issues have led to devastating floods, displacing millions and destroying livelihoods.

The campaign encourages citizens to demand accountability from political leaders and to question candidates on their plans for climate adaptation, renewable energy development, and environmental protection. GIFSEP warns against supporting candidates who ignore climate change, stressing that every Nigerian is affected by environmental issues regardless of political affiliation.
