Kwankwaso: Yar'Adua's Death Caused Zoning Confusion

Rabiu Kwankwaso, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), stated in an interview that the death of former President Umar Yar'Adua led to confusion regarding the power rotation system in Nigeria. He argued that the NDC's decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South is intended to resolve this confusion.

Kwankwaso noted that the introduction of the zoning system by Yar'Adua, who was in office until May 2010, contributed to the current issues. He explained that after Yar'Adua's death, Goodluck Jonathan, who was his deputy, completed the term and later won a full term in 2011.

Kwankwaso acknowledged that the starting point for counting the zoning years is debated, with some arguing it should begin in 1999. He emphasized the importance of unity within the NDC and the need for quality leadership in Nigeria, regardless of regional affiliations.

Kwankwaso also mentioned that he formally joined the NDC on May 3, after defecting from the African Democratic Congress amid internal disputes.
