Yobe Assembly Proposes Bill to Modernize Tax Administration

The Yobe State House of Assembly is advancing a bill aimed at repealing the existing state revenue codification law and re-enacting a tax administration law. This initiative was presented by the House Leader, Hon Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, during a session where the bill underwent its second reading.

The proposed legislation seeks to establish a modern and comprehensive legal framework for tax assessment and collection in the state. Key features of the bill include the introduction of electronic tax payment registration, digital tax assessment, online payment systems, and electronic record-keeping.

These reforms are designed to eliminate multiple taxation and enhance the efficiency of tax administration, thereby blocking revenue leakages. The bill also aims to align the state’s tax administration system with the federal government's initiatives to strengthen internal revenue generation.

Several lawmakers, including Hon Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa and Hon Moham Isa Bello, expressed their support for the bill, emphasizing its necessity for improving the state's revenue administration. The Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Chiroma Buba Mashio, has referred the bill to the House Committee on Finance for further legislative scrutiny.
