Zambia Supports Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Sahara

Zambia has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the autonomy plan for the Sahara, as stated by Zambia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mulambo Haimb, during his visit to Morocco. The support aligns with the historic adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, which emphasizes Moroccan sovereignty and the proposed autonomy plan as a credible basis for a political solution to the Sahara dispute.

The joint communiqué issued in Rabat following discussions with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, highlighted Zambia's backing of UN efforts to resolve the regional dispute. Haimb expressed that the autonomy plan is seen as a serious and realistic solution to the issue.

The statement also noted the positive developments in relations between the two countries, particularly since the opening of the Zambian embassy in Rabat in October 2020 and the consulate in Laayoun. Currently, 20 countries have opened consulates in southern cities like Laayoun and Dakhla, with 110 UN member states expressing support for Morocco's autonomy plan.
